Hiroshi Sugimoto. Once I saw his work (seascapes, in this case), at a Gagosian Gallery, properly lit for once, and I got it, I just understood it, deeply. It felt like a Rothko. Whereas I believe one of his seascapes is the cover of a recent U2 album and it just looks blah.
I love his Theaters series. That feels like it translates beyond the print somewhat. I’m not sure why.
