Get a reputation as the town slut, get “pregnant,” get “sent away” for nine months and put that fake baby up for adoption.
I wrote about the best Canadian coming-of-age movie, New Waterford Girl, which features a sparkling script, a lovely lead performance by Liane Balaban that will have you missing the heyday of Winona Ryder, and a distinctly feminine point of view. It is by the guy that did Empire Records, and it is available on Netflix Instant. You should watch it!
(I think one of the reasons this film resonates with me, particularly at this juncture, is that I am in a “gotta get out of this place” stage in my life… despite the fact that I am ostensibly an adult, with, you know, agency and choices. The difference in that “too big for the stage” energy, between teenage self-absorption and adult wisdom, is maybe something to think about and write about, I suppose.)
